Why I love this time of year

Posted by Jack Deus on November 21, 2007

It’s the day before Thanksgiving and it started snowing today. On the drive to work this morning I started to think about all of the things I love about this time of year…

-All of the Christmas songs/trees/lights appearing before the Thanksgiving turkey is even brought home, let alone eaten. I mean, who doesn’t love two straight months of hearing the same 15 carols being sung 86 different ways, each, no matter where you go or what radio station you tune in to? Thank God I have a stereo in connection in my car to plug my iPod into, otherwise I think you would read about me and something I did from the top of the college clocktower.

-Shoveling snow. I don’t think there is anything I would rather do after a long night of snowfall than wake up and hour earlier than normal, grab a shovel, risk throwing out my back, and almost freezing my face off, just to walk back inside to see my wife still in bed because the school where she teaches cancelled school for the day, but knowing I still have to go to work.

-Driving in the snow (part 1). As I mentioned before, it started snowing today and as I was driving to work I saw not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 different accidents due to the snow. Two of the accidents  had completely stopped traffic behind them (luckily I was going the other way). I mean, seriously, we live in Nebraska people, there is snow on the ground for 1/3 of the year. How have you not learned to drive in it yet?

-Driving in the snow (part 2). One of the other things I noticed today was almost all of the drivers were driving like old grandmas. Except the old grandmas, they were driving 15MPH on the interstate. I can’t tell you how much fun it was swerving in and out of traffic when I WASN”T EVEN GOING THE SPEED LIMIT. It made me feel like a racecar driver, or a getaway driver.

-Seeing smokers shivering outside. Ok, this one actually doesn’t impact me one way or the other, but I had to comment on it because as I found it humorous when I walked into work today and saw 5 or 6 people standing outside, freezing their buns off, just for a fix of nicotine. It is even funnier because my work has a designated smoking room, where these idiots can sit and kill themselves in a warm environment. I think they are just used to standing outside shivering everywhere else they go that they don’t even notice it anymore. Morons.

-Spending a small fortune on blue stuff for my windshield. Seriously, how do the roads get so dirty that I have to buy a bottle of blue windshield wiper fluid every other week? Are the roads always that dirty and I only notice when a little bit of wet snow mixes with it and flies onto my windshield? Is the snow dirty?Anyone have an answer to this? Or better yet, a solution for it.

-Cleaning off my car. I’d like to think I keep my garage clean enough to park both my wife’s and my car in it all year round because I am a fairly organized person (the fact that my wife won’t let me buy every power tool I see probably helps too), but one of the reasons I keep it so organized is because I hate, hate, hate cleaning snow/ice off of my car. Unfortunately, it doesn’t just snow at night when my car is tucked in to my garage as snug as a bug in a rug. Nope, it also snows during the day, too, which means when I come out of work or class I gotta scrape the snow and ice off my car. If either of you loyal readers knows how I can prevent this from happening please leave a comment.

There you go. 7 reasons why I love the winter. If any of you couldn’t tell that the entire list was sarcastic, please take my Common Sense Quiz and then spend some time interacting with actual human beings.
